The Czech Senate has rejected China’s attempts to manipulate the UN resolution and has expressed its support for Taiwan’s meaningful participation in international cooperation

Prague, 5 March 2026 – The Senate of the Parliament of the Czech Republic has strongly rejected the People’s Republic of China’s (PRC) misinterpretation of UN General Assembly Resolution 2758. In doing so, the Senate has expressed its support for Taiwan’s right to participate meaningfully in international organisations, while also issuing a warning against the dangers of distorting international law.
Key facts about UN Resolution 2758
The resolution, adopted on 25 October 1971, recognises the PRC government as the sole legitimate representative of China in the UN. It has clear limitations. It does not mention Taiwan or its citizens, nor does it address its political status. It does not establish China’s sovereignty over Taiwan. It does not restrict third countries‘ sovereign right to develop relations with Taiwan. Furthermore, it does not grant PRC representatives the right to threaten Taiwan with the use of force.
Support for international engagement and security
Senators support Taiwan’s meaningful participation in organisations such as the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and Interpol. According to the Senate, stability in the Taiwan Strait is essential for international security and prosperity. Any blockade would severely disrupt both, endangering global shipping routes and supply chains.
‚I am proud that the Senate, which has worked to develop relations with Taiwan for the past 30 years, is now adopting a resolution that aligns with the common position of the G7 countries and the European Parliament,‘ said Pavel Fischer, the rapporteur and committee chairman. He emphasised that the current resolution builds on the upper house’s long-term activity, as well as on Senate President Miloš Vystrčil’s historic visit to Taiwan in 2020.
Two resolutions requiring attention
The adopted resolution recalls two earlier Senate resolutions. The first, adopted on 20 July 2022 as No. 523 at the 27th meeting, was issued on the occasion of the visit of the Speaker of the Legislative Yuan of the Republic of China (Taiwan). It states that the Senate ‚expresses its conviction that dialogue between the democratically elected members of the Parliaments of the Czech Republic and Taiwan plays an irreplaceable role in building mutually beneficial relations between these two subjects of international law‘. The second resolution, adopted on 20 May 2020, concerns the People’s Republic of China’s unacceptable attempts to interfere in the internal affairs of the Czech Republic. In this resolution, senators expressed their support for the President of the Senate to visit Taiwan accompanied by a business delegation.
Further cooperation is recommended
The adopted resolution calls on the Czech government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to actively defend against Beijing’s abuse of Resolution 2758 at the UN. Specifically, it recommends further developing cooperation with Taiwanese partners in areas such as research and development, innovation, start-ups, microchips, and security.
